What information do GPS vehicle tracking systems provide?

Here are some examples and a summary of how you can use data provided by GPS tracking devices. The types of questions you can answer with GPS tracking are in italics.

Location data includes latitude and longitude provided in degrees, minutes, and seconds accurate to 33 feet. The location of a vehicle is updated at intervals of between 2 to 15 minutes. You can set the interval or use the standard update interval set by the manufacturer. Who is closest to the customer who just called? You can see where all drivers are by checking the map. You won’t ever have to call an employee to find out where he is.

Speed calculation is determined by rate of movement in miles per hour. Movement in excess of a preset speed or owner-set speed triggers an alert which is sent to you. Are any employees routinely speeding? Speeding wastes gasoline and causes excessive engine wear. To the public, your vehicles represent your company. What kind of an image does a reckless or speeding company vehicle present?

The present direction or compass direction in which the vehicle is traveling is expressed as north, south, east, or west. Is employee “x” on his way to see the customer, or is he leaving the customer’s location? It’s on your computer screen map.

Geofence use consists of programming a virtual geographic boundary. If a vehicle crosses this boundary, an alert is sent advising you. The alert is usually sent by e-mail or an automated telephone call and includes the vehicle’s identification, the date and time of crossing, the location of crossing, and more, depending upon the system. A Geofence can be set from 1/4 mile to 20+ miles in diameter. E-mail alerts can be sent to your Blackberry or a portable device. You can monitor your company’s vehicles even when you’re away from the office or your desk. You can have an alert sent to answer this question: Is a delivery truck at the warehouse gate?

You can receive a report on the vehicles that drove the highest speeds. You can ask an employee, “Why were you driving 80 m.p.h.?”

Historical data, maintained for 30 days, includes a detailed record of all data related to each vehicle. Which vehicles averaged the highest miles each day? Export vehicle data to a worksheet to compare productivity between employees.

Each instance of a vehicle’s ignition being turned on and off is recorded, along with the time, date, and location where it was turned on or off. Is Hooter's restaurant on employee Z's route?

An idle report includes the time, date, location, and duration of each instance where a vehicle remained motionless while the engine was on idle. The owner can adjust the duration of the idle time allowed before the system generates a report. Idling wastes fuel and causes unnecessary engine wear. Employee Z's vehicle idled twice as long as employee Y's; perhaps employee Z should be advised to turn off his vehicle when making deliveries.

An accumulated mileage alert is sent at 3,000 miles, 5,000 miles, or at an owner-set interval indicating that it’s time for regular preventative maintenance. This alert may be sent by e-mail.

Location information can be accessed on demand, regardless of when the last scheduled update occurred.

Maps are presented in great detail. Each vehicle’s location is displayed on a street map that the owner can enlarge or reduce to see more or less detail. Where is employee Y? I need to find him right now!

Landmarks are reference points which may or may not be visible on a given map. They are created to designate locations that important to the system user. Landmarks could be the office, customer locations, vendors, warehouses, satellite offices, etc. Employee A says that Main Street is closed for construction. What is a good alternate route? Who’s been to the warehouse today?

Breadcrumbs consist of a trail of points showing a vehicle’s route during a certain period of time. These points can be displayed when requested. Do the routes of vehicles A and B overlap?

Many GPS tracking system providers offer additional information, but even this list of basic data can give you all the information you need to manage your vehicles with great efficiency.
